What Sprouts First When the Earth Burns - A Staged Reading

Kindling Arts Festival - 20% off passes using links below

Caught between a heightened reality and an unearthly dream world, Fjolla Hoxha's layered play What Sprouts First When the Earth Burns? examines the many ways women's freedoms are challenged in a normative world. Willingly or forcedly, Anisa has cut her ties with the outside world. Preparing for a dramatic departure, her planning is interrupted by a sudden visit by Vala – while unclear if she's her mother, lover, sister, or friend, it’s clear that she is definitely more than just an acquaintance. Is Vala’s visit meant to support or even save Anisa, or is there more to it? This fascinating new work confronts a powerful question: Is it possible to understand another person's difficulties or is it the relationship between us that helps us elucidate our deepest reactions?

What Sprouts First When the Earth Burns? was devised by playwright Fjolla Hoxha and theater director Flutra Zymi for the National Theater of Kosova in 2015. The show was part of the repertoire of the National Theater of Kosova for six months.
